There is no known cause of substance use disorder, but several risks have been identified. We don\u2019t use the term \u2018abuse\u2019 anymore, as language is important. \u201cSubstance use disorder\u201d is now the medical term used to describe uncontrolled use of a substance despite negative consequences to one\u2019s health, work, studies, family, and day-to-day functioning. Problem drinking, or abuse, is using alcohol in ways that are harmful to the drinker or to others.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class='aligncenter' style='display: block;margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;' src=\"https:\/\/ecosoberhouse.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/c4baf51d-9a1c-4a99-99a8-3073421bdca3-2-1-1-300x200.webp\" width=\"305px\" alt=\"difference between drugs and alcohol\"\/><\/p>\n<p>According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration\u2019s 2014 National Survey, approximately 21.5 million people, aged 12 and older, had a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) in the past year. These numbers include individuals who are suffering from both alcohol and drug addiction.
